Film & Television Course Curriculum - Art Department Skills


Overall Aim:

To prepare students for:
(a) Trainee Art Department position for studio production in the Television/Video Industry.
(b) Specialised areas of the Art Department including Set Design, Properties & Manufacture.

To achieve this the Art Department skills curriculum includes:

11-01. An introduction to
(a) the Film, Video and Television Industry and its Art Department practices with particular reference to the NZ Industry;
(b) the duties and responsibilities of key personnel/crew employed in the key art departments on a range of productions ranging from short films to television dramas and commercials as well as feature films.

11-02. Practical work experience in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of at least 3 Art Department jobs, on a series of film/video productions graduated from television studio shows to short drama productions, in order to experience the way the work inter-relates with the rest of the crew and creatively contributes to the finished production.

11-03. An introduction to and basic practical experience in each of the following Art Dept planning steps:
(a) Script scene by scene breakdowns
(b) Research
(c) Conceptualisation
(d) Budgeting
(e) Storyboarding
(f) Design Roughs
(g) Detailed set construction plans
(h) Detailed set drawings and models
(i) Set construction and finishing specifications
(j) Scheduling of construction and finishing
(k) Commissioning of contractors and facilities
(l) Buying of set dressings, props costumes
(m) Test shooting of film/tape stock and lighting re sets, locations, wardrobe, makeup, special effects
(n) Continuity testing
(o) Art Directing
(p) Standby props, set dressing, wardrobe makeup

11-04. Practical training and basic experience in the safe use and operation of Art Department equipment such as
  • Skill Saws
  • Staplers
  • Band Saws
  • Hot Wire Cutters
  • Sanders
  • Grinders and Hammers

11-05. An introduction to:
(a) Establishing an Art Dept office/workshop;
(b) Maintaining an up to date knowledge of the NZ Film, Video and Television industry Art Dept companies/people and the projects that these they are working on;
(c) The creative and commercial demands of the Industry and how these aspects influence the work of the Art Dept.

11-06. Art Department curriculum consists of NZQA Unit Standards and Internal Units covering all aspects of the running requirements of a practical Art Department including:
  • Conceptual Design
  • Character Design & exposition
  • Properties management including sourcing and continuity management
  • Also all studio and workshop positions.
