Film & Television Course Curriculum - On-Screen Acting Skills

Note: 'On-Screen Acting Skills' is not available as a specialist skills major

Overall Aim:
To prepare students for:
(a) Acting roles in Film and Television;
(b) Positions within the industry where an understanding of the concepts and practicalities of acting will enhance their performance;
(c) To foster personal development including self confidence, communication skills, interdependence, creative thinking, self motivation, commitment and focus of energy.

To achieve this, the comprehensive acting curriculum includes:

9-01. The practical use of theatre games to break down group inhibitions and provide the medium through which the individual student develops the confidence to become aware of and explore their own psyche.

9-02. An introduction to, and practical experience in, Action playing -
Physicalisation: The basis of acting is "to do"; "to carry out an action." Acting as a dynamic process involving "objective - motivation - obstacle". Through improvisation, scene work and exercises, students learn to break through blocks, discover and deepen a sense of truth, spontaneity and ease of expression.

9-03. Energy flow and Communication
Developing an understanding of, and practical skills in, communication where the focus is on action playing with the words arising from this. Exploring the energy flow involved in communication and the importance of concentration focus and relaxation.

9-04 Speech
The biological and practical basis of speech and the development of clarity, resonance and the ability to convey meaning with both intellectual and kinaesthetic qualities.

9-05. Imagination
Developing an understanding of, and practical experience in, using creative imagination and its importance in liberating the student from the confines of the social moment of their own generation.

9-06. Characterisation
Developing an understanding of, and practical skills in, working in the industry including:-
(a) Performance in end of year dramas and other drama exercises throughout the year;
(b) An ability to hit marks with accuracy and naturalness;
(c) A preparation process for auditions;
(d) An understanding of your responsibilities in pre production and the professional integrity you need to bring to this.
