Film & Television Course Curriculum - Post Production Skills


Overall Aim:
To prepare students for:
(a) Trainee editing positions in the Film, Video and Television Industries
(b) Assisting on the editing of film/video productions
(c) Editing of trainee short film/video productions.

To achieve this the Post Production/Editing skills curriculum includes:

6-01. An introduction to
(a) the Post Production sector of the Film, Video and Television Industry;
(b) the work, responsibilities and duties of post production Editors and personnel;
(c) the post production work involved in various productions, ranging from short TV programme items to television documentaries and feature films;
(d) The way the operation and work of other production departments and/or personnel inter-relates with the work of the Post production department and its personnel.

6-02. An introduction to and extensive practical working experience in, the operation and basic maintenance of all equipment, facilities, materials and supplies utilised by the Post Production department of the South Seas Film and Television School on productions, ranging from short programme items to documentaries and dramas.

6-03. An introduction to
(a) essential equipment used by the Post-Production departments of the Film, Video & Television Industry;
(b) relevant equipment, facilities, materials and production procedures utilised by other departments in the Film, Video and Television Industries, that inter-relate with the Post-Production department

6-04. An introduction to, and practical experience in, the following Video Post-Production requirements
(a) VCR set up and operation
(b) Clean cutting of video & audio
(c) EDL operation & management
(d) Time Line editing and operation
(e) Effects editing
(f) Equipment Bookings & Maintenance.

6-05. A basic introduction to the historical development and conventions of Film Editing, including film editing equipment and editing processes such as edge numbering, synchro-nisation of film and audio, logging and storage of audio and film.

6-06. An introduction to, and practical experience in, the following Film/Video Editing creative techniques:
(a) Shot identification and definition
(b) Composition/Framing
(c) Editing Sequences
(d) Montage
(e) Continuity and Cutting Lines
(f) Camera Angles & Eyelines
(g) Edit Pacing & Tempo
(h) Image/Sound processing/monitoring to compensate problems and meet Broadcast Standards
(i) Visual Effects selection and audience perceptions
(j) Integrating film/video editing with multi track audio editing.

6-07. An introduction to, and practical experience in, the following essential pre-production planning requirements:
(a) Project Research
(b) Shot Lists and Story Boards
(c) Paper Editing, Shot Selection and Sequencing to create flow and structure
(d) Liaising with Producer, Director, and Heads of other Departments to plan, schedule and establish all equipment, facility, supply and material requirements.

6-08. An introduction to, and practical experience in, the following technical/technological aspects of video post production:
(a) Component to Composite signal encoding
(b) Waveform Monitor and Vectorscope operation and reading
(c) Composite video signal calibration and time base correction
(d) VITC and LTC Time code operation
(e) Signal distribution
(f) Video Edit Suite design and signal flow, plus an understanding of television transmission and video tape recording techniques.

6-09. A basic introduction to the post production facility hire companies and broadcasting/production companies as well as the freelance personal/crew who make up the NZ Film, Video and Television industry and the projects that these companies and people, especially Film/Video editors, are working on.

6-10. A basic practical work experience in carrying out all the duties and responsibilities of a post production Editor, on an extensive series of film/video productions graduated from short television news/programme items and television commercials to 10-15 minute duration television documentaries and drama programmes.

6-11. A competent practical experience at
(a) working with Directors and Producers to conceive, develop and plan programme or film ideas to suit intended target audiences;
(b) communicating clearly with all post production personnel, as well as other production crew, in order to creatively co-ordinate their work with your own.
