In addition to full time Diplomas, South Seas offers a variety of intensive short courses. Many of these courses are held on demand, so please register your interest by filling out an application and we will inform you on the next course dates. These courses are written by South Seas and are not registered with NZQA.

    Learn how to create concept art for games/film & animate 3D characters using Autodesk Maya.

    3 hour workshop. Hands-on instruction taught by experienced professionals. Completely FREE!

    Level: Beginner to advanced

    Photoshop is without question the world’s leading graphics program for photo-manipulation, digital painting and design and has become an industry standard.

    Students will receive a comprehensive introduction to the Photoshop CC 2015 interface and tools, and use practical exercises designed to progressively build skills throughout the four sessions. Using this exciting software, students are able to explore endless visual and creative possibilities and extend their design and artistic skills. More challenging exercises are available for more advanced students.

  • Digital_Painting_Short_CourseDigital Painting

    Duration: 4 x 3 hour sessions
    Time: 6pm – 9pm on Monday evenings

    Digital Painting has become the preferred choice for the modern artist, and is used to create stunning artwork for web, comics and illustration. This short course introduces you to the techniques and closely guarded tricks of digital artists using Photoshop.

    • Professional techniques to create digital art
    • Digitally drawing and painting characters and environments using Photoshop
    • Using a digital drawing tablet
    • Importing images into Photoshop for painting
    • Preparing images for a portfolio

    Tutor: Greg Chapman joined the animation industry in 1999. His extensive project history as an animator includes television shows for Disney, Warner Bros. and Nelvarna, as well as feature film projects, music videos, websites and television commercials.

    Level: Beginners – basic computer literacy is required.

    This short course will get you started creating Flash animation suitable for everything from TV to websites. They are held on four consecutive Thursday evenings from 6 – 9pm.

    During this course you will be introduced to the software, its interface, tools, functions and capabilities. This course focuses on making animation using Flash.

  • South Seas Maya Short CourseMaya

    2016 Dates:
    July 28, August 4, 11 & 18
    Duration: 4 x 3 hour sessions
    Time: 6pm – 9pm on Thursdays
    Level: Beginners

    Maya is used throughout the film, television and gaming industries to create stunning 3D creatures and worlds, animation and visual effects.

    • Introduction to 3D Art
    • Maya interface and tools
    • 3D Modelling
    • 3D texturing, lighting and rendering
    • Introduction to Photoshop
    • Introduction to UV maps
    • Importing and Exporting ‐

    Workshop Outlines
    Workshop 1 ‐ UI, navigation, layout, project set‐up, modelling tools.
    Workshop 2 ‐ Continue modelling tools.
    Workshop 3 ‐ Shaders, UV mapping, texture assets. Basic lighting & rendering
    Workshop 4 ‐ HDRI mapping/lighting, add & adjust shadows, render a final image
    At the end of this practical introductory course students will have modelled, textured and rendered a CG still life image.

    Tutor: Dean Stolpmann has worked as a Concept & CG Artist for companies including EA (Electronic Arts), Sony, Codemasters, Gameloft and more, on computer and console games, feature films and various commercial projects.

    Level: Beginners – basic computer literacy is required. It would also be an advantage (but not necessary) if you have had some previous experience with Adobe software, and/or any basic 3D software. This is not essential, but will be to your benefit.

  • South Seas Character Art Short CourseCharacter Art

    Held on Demand
    Level: Beginners

    Outcomes: At the end of the course students will have developed a character art portfolio piece, presenting their final character, suitable for game development. Design and sketch a character. Apply colour using digital painting tools.

    Workshop outline

    • Session 01 – Initial concept sketching, design tools & process, exploring ideas, using reference images.
    • Morning Break
    • Session 02 – Development. Exploring variations and details, costume, hair, accessories and physical features. Draw a final design concept.
    • Lunch break
    • Session 03 – Painting colour concepts. Final details and presentation. Saving a final piece.

    Previous Experience needed

    Level: Basic computer literacy is necessary when doing this course. It would also be an advantage (but not necessary) if you have had some previous experience with Adobe Photoshop software, and using a drawing tablet. This is not essential, but will be to your benefit.

    Please bring along a USB storage device (memory stick) to take away your final work.
